Reseña de álbum

Good Citizen of the Month (1997) was the tenth release on Athens, GA's Kindercore Records. Label owners Ryan Lewis and Dan Geller had formed Kincaid in the mid-'90s with Lewis on drums, Geller on guitar, Patrick Valentine on bass, and Greg Harmelink on vocals and guitar. The band's mostly slowed-down pop appeal didn't completely fit into the twee pop sound that Kindercore was known for early on. This disc, the band's full-length debut, energized the indie pop scene with its simplicity. The disc starts off with "Nobody's Been Here," a smooth and short song which introduces the listener to the band's clean instrumentation. The crunchiest song is track three, "Cool Jets Baby." Geller's backing vocals stretch the song out, giving it a playful feel. The fourth track, "Babyhood," continues with more of Harmelink and Geller's vocal interplay. While the band mostly relied on the simple guitars/bass/drums combination, Moog and keyboards were added to songs like "Great America," "Super Elfin Lipstick," "Gloucester City, New Jersey," and the final track, "Storm King." The disc ends with two untitled bonus tracks. Kincaid's music was instantly difficult to categorize. After the release of a single and this CD, comparisons were made to Low and other intricately melodic indie bands. With this debut, the band turned heads with their mid-tempo musical arrangements. Harmelink's soft and understated lead vocals also garnered attention. Even with the slow tones, an overriding sense of optimism swells out of the band's songs, which is truly unique. The songs on Good Citizen of the Month were recorded by the band in 1996 and 1997 in Athens.
