Planet Jazz contains a good cross-section of Dizzy Gillespie's best-known RCA numbers, including "A Night in Tunisia," "St. Louis Blues," and "Lover, Come Back to Me." Although it doesn't offer anything of interest to jazz purists or completists, Greatest Hits is a nice sampler for newcomers and casual fans. [Note: the contents of RCA's Greatest Hits compilation are identical.]

Dizzy Gillespie's contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis' emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated.
