Lee Dorsey

About Lee Dorsey

Second only to Fats Domino as an exemplar of New Orleans music, Lee Dorsey (1924-1986) made his name through a string of classic hit singles, including "Ya Ya," "Ride Your Pony," "Working in a Coalmine," "Everything I Do Gohn Be Funky" and "Yes We Can." Working in tandem with producer Allen Toussaint and the great backing band the Meters, Dorsey, with his sly, good-time vocals and clever lyrics, made for many of the greatest Crescent City hits, many of which were later covered by artists ranging from Devo to the Pointer Sisters.
