About Tania Kernaghan

b. Tania Maree Kernaghan, 18 July 1968, Albury, New South Wales, Australia. Kernaghan was raised in a highly musical atmosphere; her father is Ray Kernaghan and her siblings are brother Lee Kernaghan and sister Fiona. Tania first performed in public at the age of four and was very soon a seasoned performer. From six she was in Lee’s band, the Blue Devils. She formed her own group when she was 18 and swiftly gained popularity. With Fiona, she has written some successful songs, notably ‘I’ll Be Gone’, which in 1992 was her first single. Kernaghan’s first three albums produced numerous hit singles and several successes at the Australian Country Music Awards’ ceremonies of the late 90s, including 1997s Album Of The Year for December Moon, which went platinum, and the Golden Guitar for Best Female Vocal, for ‘The Verandah’. A track from the follow-up Dancing On Water, ‘Dunroamin’ Station’ received a lot of airplay and won the 1999 Golden Guitar for Best Female Vocal at the ACM Awards, while the album itself went to number 3 in the charts. Notwithstanding the success of her first three albums, in 2005 Kernaghan’s fourth album was released on her father’s record label. In addition to concert appearances and records, in 2005-2006 Kernaghan also hosted Channel 7’s Queenslander Weekender television show. Kernaghan’s song ‘When I Ride’ was adopted by the Riding for the Disabled Association in 1999, an organization of which she served as Vice Patron. In her time away from music, Kernaghan has ridden horses at rodeo events and is also an expert racecar driver, winning the 2000 Celebrity Grand Prix. Her achievements have been recognized in a number of ways, including receiving the People’s Choice Award for Female Vocalist in 2000 and 2006 and being named 2003’s Australia Day Ambassador, and in 2005 she was the first female to be inducted into the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame. Internationally she has become steadily better known and has appeared successfully at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.
