Unheralded and unnoticed, in 2003 the British threesome called the Christians returned with their first album since 1992. True, being on a small French record label may not have been a strong marketing basis, but the music deserves to be heard. Although the album's cover artwork and the clichéd song titles provide further obstacles for anyone trying to find an indication of a return to form, nevertheless, it is pretty close to being exactly that. For one thing, even in the years of their initial success in the late '80s, the Christians provided a rare opportunity to hear classic soul music again, served up in the form of strong new songs written by the band's main writing talent, Henry Priestman. With Prodigal Sons, all the attractive main ingredients are here again: the calmly reassuring voice of Garry Christian (a real strong point; if Nat King Cole had ever had a try at being a soul singer, he might well have sounded quite like this), the gospel-based choir parts, the lyrical musings on tragedy and redemption, and, most importantly, the quality of the songwriting that ensures it all comes together smoothly. The one aspect that doesn't quite satisfy is the rather tame instrumental presence behind the voices, but that's not a major drawback. Especially early on, there are obvious attempts at integrating a few hip-hop elements into some of the songs, but that feels a bit too "tagged on" and actually distracts from the ongoing flow more than it enhances it. So, a welcome return, sounding good enough to hope to hear more from them soon (hopefully with just a little more self-confidence on their part next time).
