Album Review

This 1998 major-label debut for Columbus OH '90s punk revivalists, Gaunt, was more than a business transition to major-label identification, it's the first recording by the band that targets pop and alternative radio. With some slowed-down radio craftwork like "Different Drum Machine" tossed strategically into a play list only half-filled with the group's more familiar rapid-fire pop/punk ditties like "Glitter" and "Anxiety." Jerry Wick is in fine voice as he leads the rest of Gaunt (Jovan Karcic on guitar, Sam Brown on drums, and Brett Falcon on bass) through more than a few mellow misfires ("Bricks and Blackout") and near-anthems ("Pop Song.") More than a little puzzling, Gaunt absolutely demonstrate the songwriting and personality needed to make great music, but it all somehow fails to come together. Perhaps a different producer could have fit all the fine puzzle pieces together, but, as it stands, Bricks and Blackouts has a shaky foundation and too many songwriting and production lapses to complete its potential.
