Welcome back

Loving the colour and immediacy of this release. Mastodon are painting the world in any sonic flavour they want. Part of me craved another concept epic but this album is so fresh - some real highlights too like 'The Sparrow' and 'Thickening'. Long may they continue in this vein of form; they delivered the album no fan knew they wanted - an album as heavy as we've come to expect but one that also illustrates a serious progression in the depth of their sound, melodies and creativity - and they are starting to really hone their songwriting. I love the prog more than anyone but these songs are more restrained and delicate, which is an even greater skill. They don't trade their brutality and originality for it either; they cultivate it. Amazing stuff. Mastodon have established themselves as THE original heavy metal rock band of this era and this is another milestone in their journey. I'm with them all the way!

Kings of progression

One word...revolutionary. Mastodon are the best contemporary metal band going around at present, and this album is proof. The highlight on this album is the drummer, Braun. breathtaking stuff. I'm with Mastodon all the way as well!

Best album of the year!

Mastodon have progressed over the years as undisputed leaders in the new heavy metal scene. This cd incorporates prog style metal with melodic tones, the screaming is almost non existent, while keeping to thier heavy roots. Not many CDs stay in my car player for long, but this one has locked in since the day it was released. It is one of those albums where you will have a new favorite song every day. Curl of the Burl is a groovy melody, probably the only one suitable for radio play, however I don't think they were aiming for that. Black tongue, blasteroid and stargasim are all top tier. The rest will take you for a ride into unexpected territory into the experimental genius that is Mastodon. This album should bring on board a whole new spectrum of fans. Best cd of the year by far!

Atlanta-based sludge/stoner/alternative metal outfit Mastodon formed in 1999 around the talents of guitarist Bill Kelliher, drummer Bränn Dailor, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds. One of the more notable New Wave of American Heavy Metal acts, a genre spawned in the mid-'90s by bands like Pantera, Biohazard, and Machine Head, Mastodon's innovative, lyrically astute blend of progressive metal, grindcore, and hardcore helped position the band as one of the preeminent...
