Album Review

During the fourth season of Australia's version of the Idol franchise, the show was put under the spotlight after criticism that the alumni from the show, though all talented in their own right, were not particularly successful in terms of fame after the show was over. Thus, in the fourth season of the show, an album was released containing all the tracks performed by both the winner and the runner-up of the show in hopes of sparking some interest for the winner in a broader public's eye. This tactic was successful in the sense that it was cheap, quick, and offered the public a sampling of what was to come from fresh talent. Therefore, the first major-label release by fifth season winner Natalie Gauci works in quite the same format. Released a mere few months after her crowning, the reigning Idol queen released a 15-track album of many of the covers she performed during her run on the show, the difference being that this time around, the tracks are all full-length, studio-recorded versions of the songs. Therefore, merely months after winning the title of Australian Idol, Gauci has released a full-length major-label debut album. What makes the album work is that the tunes included are a mixed bag of pop hits, jazz tunes, and rock ballads that Gauci effortlessly sings through. However, she manages to put her own stamp on many great tracks by incorporating her skills as a piano genius, putting dark spins on crowd favorites (such as "Apologize" and "Umbrella"). All these covers, plus the addition of the single recorded post-finale, "Here I Am," create a strong base for Gauci's next effort. While the album doesn't always stand out as a vocal masterpiece, Gauci's soft supple tones help carry a motley set of songs and polish them all with her trademark finesse.

Brilliance from our Australian Idol for 2007

There's no point in hiding it... I'm a huge fan of Natalie. And for one reason - her phenomenal performances week after week never disappointed me. This album is fantastic because it covers Natalie's best performances over her time on the show. Being able to go back into the studio and "re-do" them definitely gives her an advantage over Damien Leith's album of the same name from last year - some sound more controlled (not that many needed it because her live performances were mostly spot on) - but the biggest factor for me is that many are now full length, and all are longer than the versions she sang on the show - which simply allows me to take in more Natalie Gauci brilliance. I've had this for only one day and it's been on constant rotation. People, we need to make this lady a star. Don't just write her off as an Idol 'manufactured' singer - that would be doing her a HUGE disservice, because it's just plain wrong. This girl is an interpreter, has tread the hard yards for years prior to going on Idol and that, in my opinion is something that Kate DeAraugo (in particular) has NOT (she was not a deserving winner) achieved. I can't really recommend any particular stand outs because for me, they ALL stand out.

what the hell?

why is everyone coming on here and giving it a low score cause she is doing covers??!! by winning the show she was required to record this album of her best songs from the series she is working on an original album that will be releases soon dont come and write a review of an artist you know nothing about. she is a great singer

i think natalie did an exceptional job of these songs. so many people have said that she's just ripping off these songs instead of writing her own. these people need to realise that it's a WINNER'S JOURNEY album - they're just the songs she performed on idol. she'll release an original one later. so to all the stupid people who are saying she's ripping it off, get your facts right. natalie did a great job on idol. she was one of the minimal highlights of australian idol 2007. matt corby would have cracked under the pressure of winning idol, and she's much more deserving of the title. natalie gauci and guy sebastian are the only two australian idol winners who i've actually liked. i believe she'll go very far with her career, and shoudn't be criticised just because she came out of idol. in my opinion, this album's great.

The winner of the 2007 edition of television reality talent show Australian Idol, Natalie Gauci (born November 1981) had had a below-the-radar career in the music business for a few years before her success on television. Gauci first made inroads into pop stardom as a session musician, releasing her own work -- the EP Take It or Leave It, released in 2006 -- and starting her own band, the Natalie Gauci Band, also in 2006. Although she and her band performed around Melbourne, it was to be her roller...
