Album Review

With disc number four, the Swedish band strays from its Scandinavian black metal roots and, consciously or not, managed to tap into the nu-metal breed somewhat. Don't believe it? Compare the title track to anything that Static-X has ever released. The keyboards have moved from lush and atmospheric to punchy and pointed for the most part, and even the vocals of Bjorn Strid are less abrasive overall and alternate between heavy and serene. Old fans might have a difficult time adjusting to Natural Born Chaos, but it's an impressive disc in that it combines two seemingly disparate styles seamlessly into a unique listening experience. ~ Brian O'Neill, Rovi

Melodic Death Metal at its finest

Despite what the AMG review says, Soilwork have never been a Black Metal band- their roots are purely Death Metal, with a whole lot of melody mixed in. If you like your Heavy Metal brimming with huge hooks, slick keyboards and enough Thrash riffs to sink a ship, this album is a must buy. The first four tracks are damn near faultless- "Speed" Strid's dual vocals really resonate, and the rest of the band are tight and punchy, with loads of energy to boot. Later cuts like "Black Star Deceiver" (featuring producer Devin Townsend on guest vocals) are strong, but it's the first four songs that hit you the hardest, and have the most longetivity- opener "Follow The Hollow" in particular is a real standout. Great production, head-bangable riffs, powerful drumming and many memorable songs ensure that once "Natural Born Chaos" enters your CD player/MP3 player/iPod/whatever, it will be in regular rotation for a long time afterwards.

The Swedes know how to metal

Over a decade later and still one of the finest Melodic Death Metal albums ever released. The Riffs, melodies, brutality, drums, songwriting, keys, hooks, solo's production (thanks Dev!) ….the whole package is here and you have it in spades.

Formed: 1997 in Helsingborg, Sweden

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Swedish metal sextet Soilwork formed in early 1997, fusing the country's signature ultra-heavy death metal sound with the power-groove riffs of late-'70s, early-'80s British and European metal. Vocalist Bjorn "Speed" Strid, guitarists Peter Wichers and Ola Frenning, and drummer Henry Ranta were all veterans of the Swedish scene by the time they recorded their first demo, In Dreams We Fall Into the Eternal, in 1997; bassist Ola Flink became a permanent member afterward, as did keyboardist Carlos Del...
