Os Mutantes

Os Mutantes

From the carnival fanfare that opens Brazilian rockers Os Mutantes’ manic 1968 debut, it’s immediately clear that this album is a funhouse trip like few others in psychedelia. The introductory “Panis et circenses” melts horns, garage fuzz, dinner-party noises, and even some Strauss into a gleeful three minutes, before the band careens into the rollicking stomp of “A Minha Menina” and the tropical boogie of “Adeus Maria Fulô.” But tracks like “Baby” reveal the tenderness at the core of this raucous troupe.
