Album Review

The duo of bassist Joëlle Léandre and pianist Gianni Lenoci perform 14 free improvisations on this CD. Their music is often tonal with Lenoci leaving plenty of space and Léandre being very much the pianist's equal. In fact, when Léandre bows his bass, he comes close to dominating the music for he creates a variety of passionate and intense sounds. The music is sometimes almost melodic and at other times seems a bit random, but it succeeds on its own terms because the two musicians listen closely to each other and react quickly to each other's ideas. The overall results are thought-provoking and intriguing.
