EDITORS’ NOTES

Beyoncé saved her most boldly experimental beats for her self-titled fifth album, a mature but still mischievous opus that makes monogamy cool and stability sexy. “Drunk in Love” is soaring, ecstatic and intimate, an instant wedding-playlist staple; “Partition” has Bey at her flirtiest and most independent. Throw in a feminist motivational speech, on self-love anthem “***Flawless”, and a handful of instantly iconic ad-libs (you’ll never think of the word “surfboard” the same again)—it's a triumph that’s both audacious and effortless.

Lion gets loose

@Beck

This album is supposed to talk about all different parts of a woman's life. Sometimes women feel self conscious about their bodies and need to listen to songs like Pretty Hurts, and sometimes women feel confident and sexy and listen to songs like Yoncé. And the songs are in no way mediocre. They have clever writing, great backing tracks by top producers such as Pharrell, Timbaland and even Justin Timberlake, and great vocals given by Beyoncé. The reason why a lot of people might not like this is because at first they just seem like any other song, but if you listen to them closely over time you can hear the rawness in Beyoncé's voice, the clever lyrics etc and over time you start to like the songs a lot more. When I first heard the album I'll admit I was kinda disappointed with it, but now that I have listened to it more I can see Beyoncé's vision of where she wanted to go with this album. These songs are not for people who can't understand music. These songs require thought and require you to listen closely to understand them. The videos also help show what Beyoncé thinks when she listens to the song. They are all different but work together well. It is basically an exaggerated version of what every woman's life is like. Sometimes you're self conscious, sometimes you feel confident, sometimes you feel jealous, etc. I understand if at first you don't understand this album, but after you have listened to it for a while, I literally can see no reason to hate it.
