Album Review

On this four-song EP, Midnight Oil tried some musical variations after two albums of hard rock. "Let's rock," declared Peter Garrett at the outset of "No Time for Games" (a lament for the loss of childhood in the modern world), but the music in fact was restrained, and the group tried acoustic instruments and a moody instrumental for an intriguing change of pace from their usual style. (Originally released in November 1980 in Australia on Powderworks Records, Bird Noises was re-released in 1990 in the U.S. on Columbia Records as Columbia 46136.)

Great Noises

The opening "No Time for Games" evokes memories of a carefree youth, basked in summer and surfing. "Wedding Cake Island" is a classic instrumental that still sounds great today. This EP was a nice departure from the Oils hard edge, and a sign of things to come on 10,9,8...

Sounds like sunburn

This EP has summer written all over it for me! I can feel the sunburn and the saltwater whenever I hear 'Wedding Cake Island'. This EP is a must for Oils fans and those who want to revisit or experience for the first time the early talent and breadth of those exceptional musicians, (especially the extraordinary Rob Hirst).

Lets Rock

Lets Rock indeed. What a joy this EP is, when I first heard this EP I played it till it was nearly destroyed by my cheap stylus. I thought my old man would go crazy with "some kids got no time", even he would sing it (badly) in the kitchen. Reminds me of Redhead beach Newcastle concert in the eighties, sunburnt youth and happy times. Very tight album, best played very loud.

Australia's Midnight Oil brought a new sense of political and social immediacy to pop music: not only did incendiary hits like "Beds Are Burning" and "Blue Sky Mine" bring global attention to the plight of, respectively, aboriginal settlers and impoverished workers, but the group also put its money where its mouth was -- in addition to mounting benefit performances for groups like Greenpeace and Save the Whales, frontman Peter Garrett even ran for the Australian Senate on the Nuclear Disarmament...
