Like Fennesz declares in a recent interview : it's hard to keep up with what's going on in music anymore. With all the netlabels, myspace pages and artists online, how does one keep track of what's important? In this respect the value of the recording label still stands, and holds true for Touch, who now publish their second studio full-length from Austrian Paris/Vienna based artist Christian Fennesz. It's an album of pure clarity and accomplishment. With so many ambient, laptop, guitar-based artists around today, Fennesz still manages to hold his own sound, whilst pushing it in new directions. You'll find plenty of the usual motifs characteristic of the Fennesz sound - On 'Saffron Revolution' distorted, washed-out layers of transcendent drone rise and build over physically modeled guitar loops - but expect many more surprises throughout this release. From the gentle, heavenly melodies on the title track, to the organ-like qualities in 'Perfume for Winter', and the crystalized lines of unprocessed acoustics on 'Grey Scale' - Fennesz fans and new listeners alike will uncover much. On Black Sea... a subtle masterpiece emerges... with delicate, granular tides swimming in the sands, and drawing back out, folding back in... to crash against this beautiful shore. 5 stars.
