iTunes Review

Beneath the white-on-white cover art, “The White Album” is an eclectic, 30-track album of largely stripped-down material, originally spread across two vinyl records. The album was a stark contrast to Sgt. Pepper in every aspect — from the cover art to the sounds within. The sheer breadth of material as well as the mixture of the loud and the soft is part of what makes “The White Album” so surprising. The heavy sounds of “Helter Skelter” and “Yer Blues” juxtapose with the gentle beauty of “Long, Long, Long” and “Julia”. The cacophony of “Revolution 9” is followed by the orchestral lullaby of “Good Night”. The album’s extended length gave the band room in which they could explore all of their musical influences and multiple forms of popular music, while creating revolutionary sounds in the studio.

a little pricy, but who cares, its the Beatles. The worlds greatest band has come to iTunes

Beatles on iTunes?!

There seems to be much contention about the relevance and/or commercial integrity of releasing the Beatles albums on iTunes. Were they magnificent albums? Yes. Have they been remastered? Yes. Would a truly salivating rabid audiophile Beatlemania enthusiast be content with the AAC encoding sound compression? Probably not.

If you love a 5 minute doco about an album that is more of a sentimental promo spot featuring grainy footage of the band looking pretty stoned then the iTunes releases are probably right up your proverbial, but there are probably cheaper ways of getting this album with a much higher sound quality.

If you are fortunate enough to have all the free time in the world to foreground your music listening, a massive expensive amp, a turntable and some Sennheiser earphones that were sent back through time and are made mostly of gold, space-shuttle pieces and mink fur that are so good they can actually simulate a direct line to Lennon in whichever afterlife he ended up in, then you probably wouldn't consider buying this.
If you bought the old original masters on cd however, and ripped them to your computer as i did, then these iTunes versions SHOULD be better sound quality. You may however, like me, resent being put in a situation where you have a psuedo legitimate reason to buy this material for the 3rd time.

Buy it from iTunes or otherwise, its still a fairly essential album for people that enjoy music.

Formed: 1957 in Liverpool, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s

So much has been said and written about the Beatles -- and their story is so mythic in its sweep -- that it's difficult to summarize their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans. To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously...
