iTunes Review

Summer jams ahoy. The debut album for the Blue Mountains-based four-piece Cloud Control is a feel-good drift through the mists of Laurel Canyon folk rock with flashes of pop psychedelia. A perfect example of thoughtfully rendered Australian indie pop, Bliss Release hinges on the vocal harmonies of Alister Wright and Heidi Lenffer. The duo’s voices lend a classic edge to dappled modern pop like “The Rolling Stones” and the wonderfully woozy breakout “Gold Canary”.

Taking the Bliss

'Bliss Release' is the much awaited debut release for Sydney band Cloud Control. This band is one of very few that I have enjoyed on first listen. I (like many others) was introduced to this band at Festival Hall keen to see the main act of the night; Vampire Weekend. This band should've been awarded polite applause and courtesy from an anxious crowd too concerned with the main act, however as these things happen, the were left intrigued and hopeful of a quality performance with the show opener "There's nothing in the water we can't fight". As the cynics in the crowd readjusted their expectations, people became engaged with hook after hook and responded with an overwhelming stamp of approval for the support act.

This album features all the cream of the beginning years of this band, (however the CD excludes the early single and sing-a-long favourite 'Death Cloud'). 'Gold Canary', 'This is What I said', and the aforementioned 'There's nothing in the water we can't fight' are all brilliant highlights in their own right, but it if you are expecting "filler", forget it, every song on the album hits the target. This album needs to be applauded for it's perfect songwriting and the culmination in which the songs fit together.

A lot of other bands will be making a note on the quality of this debut album. This band has a glorious sound that is struck beautifully live by all 4 members sharing vocals. The psychedelic sound of Cloud Control sometimes reminds me of the Dandy Warhols masterpiece 'Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia' which is the highest of compliments and fills me with hope for the future of this young Sydney act.

Delivers on the promise...

Cloud Control have delivered on what the EPs had promised, and more, with this album! Each song is a treasure it itself and you even get Death Cloud as a bonus. I am jealous of anyone who has seen them live. Buy it!

Should be called the Mixtures!

Fleet Foxes meets Jonathan Richmond meets Beach Boys meets Peter Paul and Mary - quite cool.
