iTunes Review

Michael Jackson's 1995 double album HIStory didn't reach the level of market saturation that the self-proclaimed King of Pop expected from himself. The reasons were many, but the pairing of new material with an album of greatest hits had blunted the public's perception of the set as a new release. So Jackson went back into the studio and remixed eight of the songs and added five new tracks. However, this only served to confuse the non-fanatic portion of Jackson's audience further. It's a shame, since Jackson shows no letup in intensity here. "Morphine" is tough and edgy and even more frightening in light of the circumstances surrounding his death. "Blood on the Dance Floor" is a solid club track, and the classic club mix of R. Kelly's "You Are Not Alone" brings a new dimension to one of the original album's best-known songs.

Eleven Years On, BoTD Still Pumps It Up!

As the title suggests, it's HIStory In The Mix - a few gems made it here from that last ripper of an set. I did enjoy this a lot - fantastic and fun like Dangerous (the previous one before HIStory Past Present Future Book 1), and the remixes sound really fresh even eleven years after initial release as do the original songs - released first in 1997, to today of 2008. All awesome dancefloor sounds here, with a running theme of fear and horror. It really should be played more often - at current, Morphine and Supafly Sister have around 25 plays on my iPod each behind just a little more than 2001's Invincible which this album keeps up with. But where's the Scream Mix, would be my question. It always has a habit of missing from compilation / mix albums - is this something to do with Janet's record label or agreements with Apple?

Michael Jackson wasn't merely the biggest pop star of his era, shaping the sound and style of the '70s and '80s; he was one of the defining stars of the 20th century, a musician who changed the contours of American culture. A preternaturally gifted singer and dancer, Jackson first rose to stardom in 1969 as the 11-year-old frontman for his family's band, the Jackson 5. As remarkable a run as the Jackson 5 had -- at the dawn of the '70s, each of their first four singles went to number one and they...
