Album Review

To say that Mr. Bungle is unfocused is like criticizing a rapper for not being able to sing — it may be true, but it misses the point of the music. Mr. Bungle is a dizzying, disconcerting, schizophrenic tour through just about any rock style the group can think of, hopping from genre to genre without any apparent rhyme or reason, and sometimes doing so several times in the same song. Mike Patton's lyrics are even more bizarrely humorous than those he used in Faith No More, and they're also less self-censored, as titles like "Squeeze Me Macaroni," "My A*s Is on Fire," and "The Girls of Porn" indicate. It's a difficult, not very accessible record, and the band wouldn't have it any other way.

Great music by a great group

Vocalist Mike Patton's musical career has spanned many bands, most notably Faith No More, and more recently Fantomas, Tomahawk and Peeping Tom. Mike joined Faith No More while already performing for Mr Bungle and the commercial success of FNM led to a recording contract for Mr Bungle and the release of this, their debut album. They had actually released several EPs before. While FNM was more of a 'mainstream' rock sound, Mr Bungle was a place for Mike and the rest of his band to experiment with the talent they possess. This talent displays itself consistently throughout all songs and the range and contrast of styles the band is capable of. Speed metal, thrash, jazz, disco, opera and even circus music all blend to form the music that is Mr Bungle, often all within one song. The constant changes and lack of a more traditional song structure may take a listener several takes to comprehend the true beauty of these songs. The originality and musical creativity are my personal highlights, especially considering that several other bands have since taken a similar formula and used it to propel their own careers. Overall a great album with a great range of sounds and songs. My mum even rates it 5 stars!

Mr. Bungle's sound and approach is a unique mix of the experimental, the abstract, and the absurd (in other words, the finer things in life). It all began in 1985, in a small California town named Eureka. The group (bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Danny Heifetz, alto saxophonist Theo Lengyel, tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Clinton McKinnon, vocalist Mike Patton, and guitarist Trey Spruance) met while in high school and took their moniker from an extremely corny children's educational film regarding bad...
