Album Review

Ugly Kid Joe's first full-length album reprises the hit "Everything About You" from their debut EP As Ugly as They Wanna Be and delivers a set of similar rockers and a handful of power ballads, including a revamped version of Harry Chapin's "Cats in the Cradle." Listeners who are too far removed from their adolescence to remember the joys of spitballs and Saturday schools won't find America's Least Wanted engaging in the least, but it wasn't designed for them. Ugly Kid Joe rocks for the average high school kid, the one that doesn't think about anything except girls, partying, and metal. On the whole, the band's mixture of fizzy, fuzzy riffs, sing-song melodies, and calculated obnoxiousness isn't that offensive, but it will certainly try the patience of anyone who doesn't find their cutesy vulgarity fun. For fans of the band, America's Least Wanted delivers the thrills.

Customer Reviews

One of the best Rock Albums of the 90's.

Ugly Kid Joe are one of the best bands of the 90's and this album is proof of that. It showcases their versatility and talent very well with a mix of anthematic hard rock tracks, some slower rock ballads, and of course, a cover of Chaplin's "Cat's in the Cradle". Whit Crane is one of the most underrated vocalists that I've heard, and he rips through all 13 tracks without missing a note. Lead guitarist Klaus Eichstadt's killer riffs and solos also go to show why this record catapulted Ugly Kid Joe onto the international music scene. Some of the best tracks include Busy Bee, Mr. Recordman (both ballads with a heavy acoustic section), while Everything About You, Neighbour, Cats in the Cradle and Don't Go all showcase the bands talent for writing great riffs, with great vocals. In conclusion, if this record was lost or broken, I'd definately buy a new one... or even two, it's that good.

Formed in Isla Vista, California, Ugly Kid Joe (whose name is a response to Pretty Boy Floyd) feature vocalist Whitfield Crane, guitarists Klaus Eichstadt and Dave Fortman (who replaced Roger Lahr), bassist Cordell Crockett, and drummer Mark Davis. The group plays basic pop-metal with touches of funk and a bratty, parodic sense of humor. Their debut single, "Everything About You," went Top Ten and helped their mini-album As Ugly as They Wanna Be become the first short-form LP ever to be certified...
