Editors’ Notes

There are many great moments on this 4x4 ride through the urban jungle. The Jungle Brothers-Mike G, Afrika Baby Bambaataa, and DJ Sammy B-emerged in 1988 with a genre-bending album Straight Out the Jungle that displayed the experimental influences of dance music, especially house. But this, their second release, captures the Brothers at their creative peak. It's filled with Native Tongue ideology and classic tracks such as "Beyond This World," "J. Beez Comin' Through," "Feelin' Alright." Released in 1989, Forces of Nature may be the last great rap album of the '80s, and it remains potent today.

Awesome album but these are re-versions of some tracks

This is one of the best hip-hop albums of the 80s. However it is often overlooked in favour of De La Soul's "3 Feet High And Rising". Nevertheless this album is the much better album for a party, the beats are infections and the flow is one of best from the period. Do yourself a favour and download this album. However a word of warning -- the version available in online stores has re-versioned tracks of many of the songs, probably because of sample clearance issues in the modern age of lawyer-dominated musical expression. This may be unfortunate, however the re-versioned tracks still have the same vocals and keep most of the original feel. But if you can also get a second-hand version on CD or vinyl (this reviewer's copy is not for sale!) it's definitely recommended to grab a copy.

Following the great success of their debut, they really performed well under pressure. Great job.

Although they predated the jazz-rap innovations of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Digable Planets, the Jungle Brothers were never able to score with either rap fans or mainstream audiences, perhaps due to their embrace of a range of styles — including house music, Afrocentric philosophy, a James Brown fixation, and of course, the use of jazz samples — each of which has been the sole basis for the start-up of a rap act.
