On Los Miticos del Ritmo, producer Will “Quantic” Holland leads a seven-piece group of cumbia and vallenato musicians in a set of originals and covers. The instrumental album is a nonstop, high-energy affair sure to set shoulders shimmying. Holland is particularly fond of old-school recordings, and this release emulates those analog documents. But the results don’t come off as studied; Los Miticos del Ritmo’s pleasures are straightforward and fun. “Cumbia Comejen,” with its fine accordion fingerings and insistent guira rhythms, gives you a good idea of what follows. The three covers are striking. Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” gets transformed into a shuffle with squeezebox bursts and tooting clarinet. Even better is a take on Michael Jackson’s classic “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough,” maybe the best cut here. The closer is a cover of Gildardo Montoya’s “Fabiola,” which appeared on The Original Sounds of Cumbia. Check out the sly tempo shifts and exciting drum solo.
