Editors’ Notes

Bright Eyes is essentially Conor Oberst, a young critically acclaimed songwriter from Nebraska who began releasing music at the age of 14 and issued two albums simultaneously in 2005. Wide Awake is the acoustic-based collection that best reflects his strengths as a singer and writer.  (The other release Digital Ash in a Digital Urn trends towards British goth-rock and electronica.) Fans admire Oberst's frail, intimate voice, which is reminiscent of a younger, less secure Paul Westerberg. His confessional lyrics can sometimes give the listener the uneasy feeling that they're eavesdropping more than listening to a finished album. Guest vocalist Emmylou Harris joins Oberst for several tracks here, the most effective being the politically charged "Landlocked Blues." Though it's Oberst's habit to surround himself with friends (his guest musician list is voluminous), he's best keeping it simple, as the touching ballad "The First Day of My Life" clearly illustrates.

Customer Reviews

Connor for everybody...

When I say that I'm Wide Awake It's Morning is Bright Eyes most accessible piece of work I don't in any way mean to belittle or trivialise it. Forgoing the bluster of previous albums, this is a much more stripped down effort with simple elements to savour, and boy there is plenty to savour here. Those who appreciate indie with an element of country acoustic thrown in for good measure should absolutely eat this up. This may not be Connor at his most ambitious, but it is Connor at his very, very best.

Shining brighter than ever

It is a very accessible piece; delving into politics, general philosophy, and love at a deeper level that still manages to be engaging. His aptitude for writing shines no brighter than on this LP, spawning tracks that will stand as a testament to his career. With a consistant blend of folk, country and indie overtones, I'm Wide Awake... sustains its listenable status from start to finish, with each song displaying a unique sound of its own. Simply having no more than 10 songs enhances the beauty of this record. Each is of such a standard that having more tracks on the album would be just self indulgent and excessive. Truly the most beautiful record I have to date. I recommend: We Are Nowhere and It's Now, Old Soul Song, Lua and Land Locked Blues

its always worth it

everything this guy touches turns to gold. yeah, his music is sad. yeah, his music is loose. yeah his voice is defoninatly below beautiful. all this jsut makes his desperation and the honesty in the songs more beautiful. this is another great album. a clear cut collection of songs more folk than anything else. an album of one genre defonatly makes it easy to listen to in a sitting. over and over. exelent. everything this guy touches turns to gold if i had to pick i would chose this record over digital ash in a digital urn

Although many musicians joined the band's rotating lineup, Bright Eyes was primarily the songwriting vehicle of Conor Oberst, a quivery-voiced Nebraska native who first attracted attention in 1994 — when he was only 14 years old — as the singer and guitarist for Commander Venus. Oberst proved to be a prolific musician, joining multiple bands (including Commander Venus, the Magentas, Park Ave., and Desaparecidos) while also co-founding Saddle Creek, an influential label that helped broadcast...
