Sounds Good Feels Good

Despite its ebullient title, 5 Seconds of Summer’s second album is the work of a band less innocent than they once were. Having widely toured their mega-successful 2014 self-titled debut, by the time they approached its follow-up they knew what life on the road was like, both the good and the bad—including the loneliness of extended periods away from home. It may not have made a huge difference to their mall punk sound, although the grandiose arrangements and instrumentation of “The Girl Who Cried Wolf” and “Outer Space / Carry On” suggest a burgeoning songwriting sophistication—but there is a more pronounced lyrical darkness. The title “She’s Kinda Hot” disguises a song that touches on mental illness and feeling like an outsider (“My shrink is telling me I got crazy dreams”). “Broken Home”—one of several tracks co-written by Good Charlotte’s Joel and Benji Madden—is an agonising take on the collateral damage of a turbulent home life, while “Outer Space / Carry On” closes the record acknowledging all the band have been through (“Carry on/Outlast the ignorance/Movin’ on/Survive the innocence”) while also delivering a message of hope: “Say a prayer/For the broken bones/’Cause who cares?/We’re all going home”.
