Editors’ Notes

Partially recorded at a cabin in the Wisconsin woods, there’s a tangible sense of wintry isolation in songwriter Justin Vernon’s gorgeous debut as Bon Iver. The rawness of For Emma, Forever Ago—often stitched together with little more than Vernon's layered falsetto, low-fi acoustic guitars and creaking ambience—gives it a chilling, love-at-first-listen power. And while tracks like “Skinny Love” and the “For Emma” are standalone highlights in their own right, the album’s seamless tour of heartache is greater than the sum of its parts.

Customer Reviews

A plot, not an album:

This deeply honest album melds together in a way like no other. I consider the works on it as one solid unit, not individual hits and tracks, but as one long, rivetting journey into the fantastically isolated wood cabin of Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), where he recorded the record. The dedication and simplicity of every piece just leaves you feeling downright centimental. We understand that within music itself, the lyrics are an excuse for the song to be heard, however, For Emma Forever Ago makes the words the show and the music becomes the supporting band. I have never felt so transported in my life. One of the greatest debut albums of all time, Bon Iver deserves our ovation.

The Best.

From start to finish, single handed the greatest album i have ever heard.
Can't wait for his next album.

It is wonderful to have music return to simple, beautiful and raw. My favourite is Skinny Love, but Bom Iver writes stunningly simple music. The songs stand alone, his voice is inruiging - and the lack of fake overworking in the studio is refreshing.
I look forward to purchasing your new album :).

Justin Vernon began recording under the nom de band Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings, and — to a certain extent — Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Vernon's solo project took DeYarmond Edison's introspective, folky sound and embellished it with squinchy, quirky orchestral touches that nodded to Sparklehorse and the drifty optimism of the Flaming Lips. Vernon moved back to Wisconsin the winter following...
