iTunes Review

The Palm Desert, CA, stoner rock unit's major-label debut came out in 1994. Immediately praised by critics for its combination of Sabbath-slow heaviness and dynamism and strong psychedelic elements, Sky Valley featured four tracks (now broken into eleven) intended to be listened to as a single piece (or two pieces for people with the vinyl edition). Alternating between a combination of crushing '70s metal with grunge aesthetics and spaced-out acoustic forays, Sky Valley lives up to the promises of '90s stoner rock, delivering faintly recognized riffs, melodic hooks and singable choruses without sacrificing any of the traits that put the music on the fringes of the mainstream. In addition to an almost constant sonic debt owed (or homage paid) to the Melvins, the humming wall of distortion that singer/guitarist Josh Homme would bring to Queens of the Stone Age's first album can be identified especially in opener "Gardenia," "Demon Cleaner" and "Odyssey" and fans of that band will certainly want to hear what Homme was up to before QOTSA. A year after Sky Valley's release, Kyuss broke up following the appearance of … And The Circus Leaves Town.

For anyone just getting into Kyuss, this is the one you want. this is my favourite album of all time. Eleven tracks of the most unapologetically guitar soaked and groovy stoner rock available and to those who dont know, Kyuss were the undisputed masters of their craft. From the opening track it doesn't let up till the end, if you have a musical ear it will send shivers up your spine. Josh Homme's guitar vibrato work on Gardenia is nothing short of legendary, with the volume turned right up when he hits that note (you'll know the one I'm talking about when you hear it) it feels like the whole room is becoming unstuck in time. This album is for anyone who loves to play cool stuff that just blows the mainstream junk out of the window. You play it at a party and everyone just nods their head and says "Hey who is this?". You actually feel at least 30% to 40% cooler when you listen to it. What are you waiting for? you cant put a price on the musical journey this album will take you on, forget about the money just buy it. NOW!

Classic stoner jams

An undeniable classic from one of the pioneers of the stoner rock movement. Welcome to Sky Valley is a charged up, blissful blend of fuzzy stoner rock, driving hard rock and trippy psychedelic jams. Though there are obvious nods to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, Kyuss cultivated these influences into their own unique art form, built around the dexterity, thick distortion and mind numbing guitar work of Joshua Homme and anchored by a tight and skillful rhythm section and the distinct vocals of John Garcia. A must have album that should be a staple in any serious rock or metal collection.

Welcome to the Real Deal

I must say two things up front. I love where Josh has since taken QOTSA, the guy seems to have the midas touch, everything he has a hand in seems to turn to gold. Secondly, the title of this album is actually "Welcome to Sky Valley", for some reason Itunes has dropped the first two words off the album title. But seriously, does it get any better than this? Before the world had even heard of "stoner rock" these guys were quietly perfecting a sound and birthing legends about a band that regularly threw a generator into the back of a pickup truck and drove out into the desert to send guitairs soaring over sand dunes in the middle of the night. I often wonder what it would have been like for a person lost in the desert to stumble across this musical oasis, would the sonic delivery be an elixir for them, quenching their thirst and saving them? I think perhaps metaphorically we are all a little bit like that lost person, wandering, waiting, listening for the majestic wave of sound that is the mighty Kyuss to come rolling over the sand dunes, bringing with it that haunting feeling of being lost and saved all at the same time...

Formed: 1990 in Palm Desert, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Hailing from Palm Desert, CA, Kyuss (pronounced "kai-uss") has become something like a heavy metal equivalent to the Velvet Underground. Although they are widely acknowledged as pioneers of the booming stoner rock scene of the 1990s, the band enjoyed little commercial success during their brief existence, but their combination of sludgy, down-tuned guitars (often played through a bass amp for maximum, earth-shaking intensity), spacey jams, galloping thrash metal rhythms, and organic drums became...
