Album Review

On this 1996 debut the Ephemera girls were still teens, but their sound was actually much less twee and girlish here than on their better-known later albums. And that is not necessarily a bad thing at all. The production and the arrangements, though often good, are not yet as sophisticated as they would later become through the aid of Yngve Saetre. This makes them sound direct and, believe it or not, quite raw at times. Christine Sandtorv dominates as a songwriter, while most of the lead vocals are done by Inger Lise Størksen, as opposed to the latter-day sharing of vocal duties. Fans of "new" Ephemera who haven't heard Glue — one should suspect there are many of them — will find that it differs from the later records. A charming and enjoyable, if not essential, album.

They signed a multiple-album deal with record industry giants BMG while still in their...
