Givers - In Light (2011 LP)

Givers’ debut record, In Light, is a charming blend of hearty melodies and warm rhythms. These are songs which are set to be the fuel in the fire for the winter months ahead, providing the humble listener with the energy to move their feet even on the coldest day. The best thing about this album is the way it effortlessly drifts from one track to the next, serving up an appetising degustation menu that allows each song to slowly creep into the listener’s consciousness.

Arguably the album highlight, not to mention Triple J favourite, is opening number “Up, Up, Up”. Dripping with infectious harmonies, it’s easy to see why this track has been on high rotation on JJJ of late. In fact, the first three tracks (“Up, Up, Up”, “Meantime” and “Saw You First”) provide a whole album's worth of good vibes. 'It comes, it goes... don’t get stuck in the meantime, no such thing as the meantime' from “Meantime” is catchy as hell, and duly accentuates the fun loving theme of the record.

“Ripe” provides the listener with the first real taste of what is one of the Louisiana (USA) five-piece’s most inimitable qualities; the boy-girl harmonies of Taylor Guarisco and Tiffany Lamson. Throughout the course of the rest of the record, each of the co-front persons dons the hat of lead vocalist to stunning effect.

The clever wordplay delivered on “Noche Nada” finds the band sounding very much like fellow Statesiders, Local Natives. The soaring melodies to close out the track will leave hairs standing upright on necks far and wide. Conversely, the no-holds-barred party vibes of album closer, “Words”, almost steals the entire show. The song is an absolute stomper and must be a sure fire riot starter in a live setting.

If avant-garde indie-pop is your fair, do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of In Light, it’s a fire cracker waiting to go bang in your earphones.
