iTunes Review

Annie Lennox’s passionate collection of festive hymns plays down the secular trimmings and returns the holiday to its origins as a time for devotion and taking stock. With the exception of the serene “Universal Child”, all the songs are traditional carols and hymns of some vintage, and have been given appropriately folkish arrangements in which guitars are plucked reverently and recorders chirp. Meanwhile, a heavenly choir of Annie Lennoxes channels the righteous spirit of Christmas past.

Will the real Annie Lennox please stand up ...

What a disappointment this album is. It’s not the choice of tracks, rather the new style of singing Annie has developed since SoMD. In years gone by I could have listened to Annie singing any old rubbish and I would have loved it. Her sound was tremendous and she truly had one of the world's unique and most beautiful voices. Sadly this new vocal style sounds flat, off key and downright awful. Annie, PLEASE go back to your old vocal style that captivated the world for so many years. As far as this album goes, if you’re not an Annie Lennox aficionado and just want a nice sounding, traditional xmas album you’ll probably like this and think the vocals are OK (and certainly they are still better than much of the rot out these days). However, I suspect there will be many fans out there as disappointed with this latest offering as I am.

Just what I was looking for

If you're looking for some Christmas music to get you in the festive spirit, but something different from all the other pop Christmas song collections, I think this is a great choice. I absolutely love the arrangements, and the Middle-eastern influence in the music adds a nice link to the origins of the holiday. My only criticism is that it's over-produced in parts (does Annie Lennox really need auto-tune?) but overall I'm very happy with this purchase.

Great stuff

This voice could only be Annie's and yes it's Xmas tunes. Annie joins the many greats of the music industry who have given these evergreens a new and refreshing lift. Definately a good alternative to some of the rubbish you hear at Xmas.

In her late teens, she won a scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Music, but she dropped out before she took her finals.
