12 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

It’d be easy to mistake Tobias Jesso Jr. for an AM radio heartbreaker from a bygone era. When Goon opens with the descending chords of “Can’t Stop Thinking About You”, the Vancouver songwriter (who was selected among our 2015 New Artist Spotlight) brings to mind ‘70s piano men like Todd Rundgren, Billy Joel and Randy Newman. As Jesso’s sandy voice floats over the string of heartsick torch songs, it’s hard not to get a bit weak in the knees (especially on the pleading single “How Could You Babe”). Goon’s understated vintage flourishes (chamber strings on “Can We Still Be Friends”, a looping tape delay on the meandering “Leaving LA”, a chugging backbeat on “Crocodile Tears") add to the glowing warmth, resulting in something that’s instantly familiar on first listen.
