iTunes Review

Tom Waits’ 1973 debut is full of tender regrets and barstool loneliness. The bittersweet country-folk of “Ol’ 55” (later covered by the Eagles) and the hushed jazz of “Grapefruit Moon” tell of two very different wounded souls. The nostalgic narratives of “Martha” and “Rosie” soothe like good fiction, whilst the R&B-tilted “Ice Cream Man” bounces with carnal innuendo. With its velvety strings, muted trumpet and tinkling piano, the gently simmering finale is all resignation and regret—just like being alone at closing time.
