The Feel Bad Soundtrack of Christmas
When Columbia used the tagline “The Feel Bad Movie Of Christmas” they really weren’t kidding… At least it applies to the soundtrack. I don’t even know where to begin. From start to finish, this is the single most haunting piece of music I think I have ever heard from Reznor. I’m finding it difficult to keep listening to the entire soundtrack on repeat, not only due to its sheer scope/ambition/length or sonic complexity (both not seen since Fragile), but because the fittingly icy emotions it stirs are those of sadness, panic, desperation, self-loathing… and just generally really "bad", much like NIN in its 90s prime. Guitars drone on; low-ends brood creating an unsettling atmosphere with delicate piano lines and climatic moments breaking up the trance Lisbeth might live through inside her head.
But seriously Reznor, Ross, Fincher, etc. -- just WOW. This should be used as a defining work regarding how one transfers emotion from art to experiencer. The more accessible Social Network was, frankly, a walk in the park when compared to what the duo have achieved here. If they don’t get an Oscar again next year (two years in a row), it shouldn’t be given to anyone. I’m speechless.
RE: NIN fans -- If you liked Still and Ghosts, Dragon Tattoo is most definitely for you. However if you prefer Broken and Spiral, then you'd most likely hate it.
It's Trent - how could it be bad
I bet it's great but the link apple sent me to download it doesn't work :S
Let this collaboration never end!!
Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, & David Fincher.
It was going to be very hard to both equal or surpass the brilliant 'The Social Network' soundtrack - the created sound was as present as a well-developed character who went through their own kaleidoscope of changes. 'The Social Network' soundtrack reflected, perfectly, the moods, tones, highs, and lows of the several central characters involved, from the university campus to the confined rooms of the legal battles.
Having read and adored Stieg Lasson's 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo', I think the partnership of Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross have again nailed both the dark but ever so rich style of David Fincher's fresh adaptation, and the cold, bleak atmosphere and themes of the novel.
At almost 3 hours, there's so much to listen to in this soundtrack, from the superb 'Immigration Song' cover from Reznor and Karen O, to the chilling sounds of 'Cut Into Pieces'. This album isn't as instantly accessible as the aforementioned 'The Social Network' - which had a more lively, playful sound to it (in many parts, anyway). Instead, Ross & Reznor seem to have blended the style of that soundtrack with their largely experimental but remarkable 'Ghosts I-IV'. I welcome it, I love it!
