In Rainbows - The Best Yet?

Never have I been more in anticipation than the time between 'Hail to the Thief' and 'In Rainbows'. And have I been disappointed; certainly not! 'In Rainbows' is surely the quintessential album for the thinking citizen in our contemporary society. Smattered with multiple meanings to be interpreted by the listener, the music is both simple in structure yet ethereal. Thom Yorke's lyrics - with skill demonstrated so vividly in his solo album 'The Eraser' - take on another dimension with the backing of a more mature Radiohead. 'In Rainbows' is an album that grows into you more with every listen, and your depth of thought about our contemporary society seems to become more analytical with every listen. The 'In Rainbows' podcast (freely available on iTunes) gives you a deeper insight into this exceptional album. The 'In Rainbows - From the Basement' video album provides us fans with another insight - with more meaning, interpretation, and admiration to undertake. The inclusion of tracks only available on the Discbox ( i.e. Bangers & Mash, Go Slowly) when 'In Rainbows' was initially released allows listeners late to discover this album, or listeners who only purchased the download, more to enjoy from the set. You'll love this!

This is a collection of flawlessly executed masterpieces. The 5 guys connect with energy and precision, the singing is notably perfect throughout each of these 10 live interpretations, all of which are better than their album versions. For me the moving and emotive 'Videotape' is the highlight, but the rockin numbers (Bodysnatchers, Bangers & Mash) are also handled brilliantly (plus you get to see Thom on drums for B&M). This is easily the finest video album ever produced.

Incredible. It definately sounds better than the recorded versions. The "Basement" feels so intimate that it feels like your snooping around at band rehearsals. It's a pity that Jigsaw Falling Into Place got the cut, thats my favourite track from In Rainbows. My picks are Bodysnatchers, House of Cards and Reckoner.

Formed: 1989 in Oxford, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Radiohead were one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's three-guitar attack, which relied on texture — borrowing as much from My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd as R.E.M. and Pixies — instead of virtuosity....
