Trainrides and lunchtimes.

I remember the first show I saw of this great band. It was in 1989. I had never seen anything of this calibre and intensity before. I spent the whole night with my jaw on the ground. I couldn't believe a bunch of four blokes could create such tension and then let it permeate into sound and aggression and angst and something beyond music. It was after seeing this show that my degree in Massappeal began. Firstly I studied its ferocity, then its defiance of orderliness yet still maintaining focus, and I slowly introduced my brain to the possibility that this actually was music! All of this took place in the only settings that would allow me solace with this beast....train rides to work and lunchtimes at work. To hear how David and Sean perfectly complimented the 'top end' of this outfit on Jazz was a treat. From the albums intro riff of 'When alls done' which sets the pace to the hats intro on 'Span' through to 'Augusts' chorus "I hold it back"aaahhh! It gives me chills. It just defys the category of hard core, punk, or any other crappy tag you need to place on it. The band has captured what millions of outfits seek....Originality. They do it without actually trying and that's where the beauty is, in its lack of ego. What an album! Thanks for the memories.
