iTunes Review

In the lead-up to Like a Prayer, Madonna became a movie star, got divorced and turned 30—her mother’s age when she died. Themes of family, faith and personal growth weighed heavily and set the stage for this album’s creative breakthroughs: “Express Yourself”, “Oh Father” and the unforgettable title track. “Till Death Do Us Part” and “Keep It Together” prove that dance-pop can be intimate and confessional, while “Promise to Try” is a soul-bearing vocal performance that makes every Madonna fan feel like her personal confidante.

one of the defining albums of our generation...

what generation you might ask? well I was born 1971, so I guess that makes it one of the defining albums of gen X. Haven't tired of listening to this album out of all Madonna's albums. Til Death Do Us Part is as brilliant now as when it was released - not possible to get tired of this song. Oh Father is a conflicting mess of lyrics and message, and whether she's writing about her own father is unclear to me listening to the song, but I still love it. Promise to Try and Dear Jessie are songs that make me very melancholy - maybe its that she's writing from the perspective of a child that hits me like a brick every time I hear either of these 2 songs.... .anyway, I ain't no music writer, but that's what I think of this album. A must have in any Madonna library. Ta!

Like A Living Legend!

You could not have got through 1989 without being aware of at least one of the songs from this album. One of my most favourite tracks; "Keep It Together" was probably one of the least played on radio, I liked the album's original version rather than the remix that was released the following year in 1990 as a double sided single with "Vogue". In my opinion that version just doesn't cut it. Madonna's collaboration with Prince on "Love Song" was a track I always thought should have been released as a single; it's a very "Prince" song and very soulful. "Like A Prayer" the single, was Madonna's only number one song from this album in Australia probably had many young people asking if there really is a God...she describes in the song; “you are a mystery” which made even me wonder. “Like A Prayer” the album, released in my final year at school has been burned into my brain for eternity and is part of the soundtrack of my life.

contains my fav Madonna song ever

I'm a massive Madonna fan and I love everything she does, but if I had to pick a fav song, it would be 'pray for spanish eyes' contained on this album. A beautiful, haunting song....

After stars reach a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their personas. Madonna is such a star. She rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle became more common. However, one of Madonna's greatest achievements is how she has manipulated the media and the public with her music, her videos, her publicity,...
