iTunes Review

After recording a covers album with soul masters The MG’s in 2007, the inaugural Australian Idol winner infused his follow-up with a Memphis feel. There’s an old-school swing to the beats and plenty of snap in these sparky originals. Sebastian’s powerhouse upper-register is in full effect, and he adds grunt and growl when spurred on by John Mayer‘s tasty guitar licks on three tracks. Jordin Sparks even steps up to match Sebastian’s supple, church-schooled vocals on the big ballad “Art of Love”.

Big and Bold

This album consists of songs that have wonderful melodies and rhythm. The title album shows off more variety in his song types so the fans and non-fans able to see oher sides of his voice. The tracks seem flow very smooth with great instrumental accompaniment to make quality sounds, which I feel many will enjoy. The title track (Like it like that) is the first single from the album, a truly excellent pop track and choice to promote this album. Having heard this track before the rest of the album, it's certainly good encouragement to listen to more. A good start to the album which continues with the lighthearted , fast shuffle rhythms track 2 (All to myself). Track #3 (Art of love), the 2nd single that features Jordin Sparks, is a mid-tempo power ballad that starts with a modern auto tune and simple arragement of piano escalates to strings and percussion. Both artists strong vocals make such a beautiful and smooth duet and complement each other's voice so well and is a perfect fit for the song. Another notable catchy duet with Tarryn Stokes (Magic) on track #5, heart stirring track #6 (Bring yourself), track #7 (Never hold you down) and track #9 (Never be you), climaxing into more upbeat melody offer memorable lyrics listeners can sing along to. Track #8 (Fail to mention) and #12 (Perfection) are beautiful written ballads, once more initially keeping the arrangements simple with the use of piano, guitar and vocal. From the rest of the album, I rather liked funky track #4 (Attention), easy listening (Coming home) and (Undo) which had interesting rhythms and arragements, giving these tracks groovy, edgy, lighhearted, dramatic and escapism feels. The final track (I feel a fire) that rounded the album off nicely. Each song had its own unique quality, be it through the use of bass, horns, guitar, piano, or Guy Sebastian's soothing vocals. Whilst Guy Sebastian's new big sound, memphis influenced pop style might not be to everyone's taste, it's worth giving the album a try, even if it's the only album of his you might buy.

Now we're really getting somewhere....

I've always admired Guy's talent. But even at concerts, being thrilled by his wonderful voice, musicianship and stage persona, much of his material has left me unmoved. I hoped with his fourth album, 'The Memphis Album', he'd realise that he was finally on track to where he needs to go. Well, it seems he's seen the light and with this album I'm at last getting the kind of Guy material I've been waiting for ... for six years or so. Guy, what kept you? This is wonderful stuff.
