iTunes Review

Josh Pyke’s first album is the ideal synthesis of Beatlesque melodies and back-porch country feeling. The title track is a luminous bit of understated orchestration, as streams of organ, drum rolls and slide guitar propel his cascading choruses. Like M. Ward and Elliott Smith, Pyke is a master of embedding subtle complexities into catchy tunes. “Lines on Palms” pulls us into an easygoing acoustic ride before blossoming into a big chorus, while “Sew My Name” starts as a wandering guitar line and slowly builds to a deep-grooved expression of loyalty.

master songwriting

Josh Pyke is the latest amazing singer songwriter to come out of the very strong Australian folk scene at the moment. He rose to fame in in the 2005 Triple J Hottest 100 with "Middle of the Hill" and his clever, introspective lyrics and beautiful harmonies continue to impress critics and indie music fans alike. His "Feeding the Wolves" EP was perfectly crafted, followed by singles such as "Memories and Dust" and "Lines on Palms". The "Memories and Dust" debut LP is an exciting culmination for a very creative, unique and captivating musician. His music rises above the sea of folk singer songwriters that are in abundance these days. If Josh was created in a science experiment gone wrong, we expect that he was probably a mixture of Darren Hanlon's poetic lyricism and Neil Finn's melody and harmony crafting powers. The end result is music that is occasionally haunting, often thoughtful, but always heartwarming. This is the kind of music you'd listen to on a sunny day or a rainy day. Great work!

Yesterday I hadn't heard of Josh Pyke. I saw the album advertised in iTunes, played the sample tracks and downloaded it straight away. What an amazing album! Complex, rich, heartfelt, harmonic and totally addictive. One of the best i've heard for a long time.... as Molly would say... "Do yourself a favour..."

Do yourself a favour!

The eagerly awaited long player is finally here and it was well worth the wait folks. Don't think, just buy it . . . now. Life is better with this album!
