iTunes Review

Completely rooted in current styles while retaining the wide edge of uniqueness, the sound and outlook here proved irresistible to millions. Lauryn Hill brought the scope of an old Tamla LP to cuts like "To Zion," with its thundering war drums and choir. "Doo Wop (That Thing)" put a protect-yourself message together with a tune and hooks that stuck in the brain instantly.

All time favourite R&B album in last 10 years!

This album is an absolute classic, no doubt! Ex-Factor, for me, is the definite stand out track, so much emotion in her vocals. If you don't have it, buy it!

r&b masterpiece: the miseducation of lauryn hill

Born from the ongoing turbulence within the Fugees, Lauryn Hill decided to embark on a solo career, to free herself from the shackles holding her down creatively and as an artist. With a newfound inspiration and rediscovering her focus, she set off to pen the songs that would ultimately end up on this influential landmark album. Now, critical opinion surrounding this album has always been positive, but I want to go that step further, and label it one of the best modern albums of all time.

The album incorporates a clever blend of RnB, reggae, hip hop and other musical influences. However, what makes this album truly standout is how it showcases Hill’s vocal and songwriting prowess. The songs on this album are performed masterfully, and each is delivered with heart. From “I Used To Love Him”, a song chronicling Hill’s acrimonious breakup with her longtime collaborator and love interest Wyclef Jean to neo-soul renditions of gospel themes in “Forgive Them Father”, Lauryn Hill established herself as one of the finest songwriters of her generation. Unfortunately, she would never walk back into the studio again, frustrated as she was by the pressures from her record label. Except for her MTV Unplugged performance, we can only imagine what could have been a remarkable and influential solo career with “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill”.

One of the most successful female rap albums of all time. An inspiration for all female emcees.

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Lauryn Hill broke through with multi-platinum-selling, Grammy-winning group the Fugees, but with her 1998 solo debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the singer, songwriter, rapper, and producer established herself as a creative force on her own. She successfully integrated rap, soul, and reggae into a singular sound. Eclectic, uplifting, and empowering, the album was often cited by younger artists as a touchstone. Following its success, Hill was something of an enigma, her recorded output limited...
