A carefully constructed album by a beautifully talented artist...

Hayley Jensen rose to prominence in the 2004 series of Australian Idol and made it through to the final four. However, her performances on the show were only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what she could and will go on to accomplish. And accomplish it she has with her debut album, 'Note to Self', an independent offering made on her own label. Some might argue this route had been travelled by Cosima De Vito, who was less than successful after initially promising results with her own debut album. However, what sets these two artists apart is the strength of the music - whereas Cosima's was strong but forgettable in more ways than one, Hayley's is diverse and promising, containing an inherent Sarah McLachlan-esque quality in her voice - no more evident than in tracks such as "Don't Cry", one of the most beautiful songs I've heard, period - that will no doubt appeal to the listeners who would not usually engage in listening to an album by an Idol alum. To anyone who may be put off by Hayley's history on Idol, I can promise you this: there is nothing like the Idol/Sony BMG marketing machine present on this album. This entire project is clearly a labour of love, one that was carefully constructed by someone who is without a doubt one of the finest female vocalists today. This album is a remarkable effort for a debut, particularly given that Hayley contributed to all songs bar one on the album. Had she been snatched up by mega label SonyBMG, more likely than not, Hayley would barely have been allowed a glimpse into the writing or genesis of her own debut record, proving that perhaps maybe the independent road - although harder and longer - may ultimately be the most successful and gratifying for the true artist; allowing them to maintain control over the music they make, as opposed to the music a label wants their newest star to make. Ultimately, I bought this album, remembering the strength of first single, 'Stronger', and upon seeing Hayley interviewed on a local news station in Canberra. Her personality, her warmth and her genuine attitude to making music for the love of it convinced me that buying this album would only be a good thing. In summation, Note to Self is an incredibly well-crafted debut effort from Hayley Jensen, a young woman who note only has the looks, but actually the talent to back it up and the knowledge and common sense to know that sometimes the long, long and windy road to a successful musical career is more often than not the best way to go.

NOTE TO SELF - A Stunning Debut Album!

An exceptional collection of songs that takes you on an inspiring emotional journey into the soul of one of Australia's top shelf independent artists. From the beautiful single STRONGER, the mystic of EMERALD GREEN, to my current favourite, ONLY ONE this girl is amazing! From the first phrase to the last whisper Hayley takes your breath away with her incredible vocal ability and true to the heart style. Did I say incredible vocal ability!! This is definitely a shivers down your spine experience! If you only add one album to your ipod this year make it one that will be played in your collection forever. NOTE TO SELF - A stunning debut album! A must for music lovers all over the world.

Impressive, most impressive

There isnt a song on this album thats out of place or that anyone would want to skip over, each song leads into the next and melds together as a whole compilation just beautifully. This level of quality writing and recording might come along once or twice in life time for most artists, Hayley not only acheives this with her first outing but this album proves just how much devotion and hard work she has put into her music, from her dulcet tones in Emerald Green to the rich power filled evanescence-esque style vocals in Don't Cry, Hayley coveys her message so clearly thus giving you a wonderfully emotional and joyful listening experience. Make a "Note to self" buy it, it should sit proudly in your music collection!
