Not as good as Flavors of Entanglement but better than So Called Chaos.

Alanis is happy again which might make some audiences fear that she's return to the standard but ear friendly middle-of-the-road fare of her loved-up 2004 release 'So Called Chaos' when she was in the beginnings of her relationship to fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds. This time she's got a new man and married with a son, but the sentiment remains the same on many tracks especially like Empathy and 'Til you which play like love letters to the partner in her life. She's still got lots to say about society in general however with the scathing look at the shallow and fame obsessed America in the track 'celebrity' and the way gender roles operate in 'woman down. The songs where Alanis looks inwardly remain some of her best however with Spiral being an album highlight with almost celtic influences and is muscially one of the most sophisticated. The production is slick like 2008s Flavors of Entanglement thanks to Guy Sigsworth returning but not as exciting or experimental as that release as the slickness almost renders the album to play it very safe in the way the album listens through from end to end. While its not as ground breaking as Flavors, its a huge improvement on her last album when in a settled state, on So Called Chaos. Its hard not to be happy that ALanis has found peace and contentment, however the album lacks the raw emotion and artistic development that saw Flavors cement itself as her best work of the last decade.

Great album - where's the bonus tracks?

Great album - Alanis never lets down her fans. I just hope she tours here!!

But iTunes/Sony - where are the bonus tracks??? There are so so so many more overseas, so why do we get nothing but the standard? :(
Best bonus tracks I've heard were on the US Target edition of the album. Awesome.

She is back

Everyone has a copy of Jagged Little Pill. That album that got us through high school, or a break up, or a break down. It was and will remain one of the most inspiring and genre altering pieces of work for a long time. This is NOT jagged little pill.

Alanis returns triumphantly with Havoc... Guitars and pulsing electronics see this album from the free and love-inducing 'Guardian' to the touching 'Til You'.

Alanis gives us her take on the limelight with the track 'Celebrity' which is probably as volatile as the album gets other than 'Woman Down'.

My personal favorite on the album is 'Lens' it's laid back progression to the chorus of seeing different sides of a story is wonderful. It sounds like it would have fit on 'So Called Chaos' well.

Another fave is 'Woman Down' which is Alanis on point with sexism and the men or man that exploits this, very cool track.

A great album. She is still growing as a person as we all are and she is sharing this with us through amazing music. The world is just a little better because of it.

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Alanis Morissette was one of the most unlikely stars of the mid-'90s. A former child actress turned dance-pop diva, Morissette later transformed herself into a confessional alternative singer/songwriter in the vein of Liz Phair and Tori Amos. However, she bolstered that formula with enough pop sensibility, slight...
