The year 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, which has prompted a worldwide remembrance of The Bard’s work. Paul Kelly, an avowed Shakespeare buff, takes the poet/playwright’s famous words and fits them into a folk-rock framework. “Sonnet 18” opens with Kelly singing the opening lines a cappella (“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day…”). No need to be schooled in British literature or fluent in the rules of iambic pentameter to understand the human emotions propelling Seven Sonnets and a Song. Kelly sings with the committed reverence that inspires another great Shakespearean verse: “If music be the food of love, play on.”
