Melon Collie & the infinite blandness

The album commences with the rambling and shambolic "Quasar". Lyrically immature with improvised riffs from previous SP outings in merges seemlessly into "Panopticon" - I honestly didn't know the first song had ended. "The Celestials" gave me hope but quickly faded into the self pitying "Violet Rays". Corgan has become so self-indulgent in his reminiscing of lost love, youth and the exhuberance for life he once had that this album is a sad eulogy to a once great band. Not that this is anything more than Billy and 3 employed 20 something musicians. Corgan wrote the entire album which is a shame as it doesn't showcase any of the talents the other 3 possess.
The childishness of the lyrics is disdainful. Illconceived and poorly structured, they are so abhorrent I could see them only fit to be printed upon toilet paper.
Despite all his rage, Billy has become an old man crying for the past. It is as sad as watching a friend descend from a shining light into a drug infused junkie who desperately needs a fix. Unfortunately what is broken in Billy can't be fixed, at least not without a little help from his friends. If he wants to continue under the SP moniker I suggest he makes amends with James and Jimmy.

Classic - Welcome Back Pumpkins

Great work by the Pumpkins, a genuine classic that deserves repeated listenings.

Beautiful sounds.

Surprised by the atmosphere that SP managed to create in this album. Definitely one of the best releases in the past few months!

Of all the major alternative rock bands of the early '90s, Smashing Pumpkins were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock. Lead guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan fashioned an amalgam of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth rock, psychedelia, and dream pop, creating a layered, powerful sound driven by swirling, distorted guitars. Corgan was wise enough to exploit his angst-ridden lyrics, yet he never shied away from rock star posturing, even if he did cloak it in allegedly ironic...
