This album is breathtaking!! I believe this is the best album Opeth had ever released and yes I understand what a big statement that is!! After the first time I heard it, to be honest I didn't like it at all!!! After listening to it a couple of times a day in the work van for a week the sheer brilliance of the songs slowly revealed themselves to me!! Be patient with this one if you initially aren't impressed, repeated listens are needed to get your head around how profoundly talented this band is!!! This album makes Heritage make more sense. They were heading in this direction with the hit and miss heritage and with Pale Communion they nail it!!! I love all their albums back to Still Life and without trying I can really appreciate how Mikael has grown as a song writer/ studio wizard!!
If you want speed, noise and growling, look elsewhere. If you want amazing prog rock where every track is a gem, this is for you!! Also listened to the 5.1 Blu ray mix!!! Speechless, Mikael you're spoiling us!!! Haha

Simply outstanding

On first hearing I wasn't sure if Opeth had delivered - and following the disjointed Heritage they probably needed to - but after a few spins this may contain some of the best music ever written by Akerfeldt and co.

If you are a death metal fan then you will hate this one but if you appreciate artists pushing beyond boundaries that they have created then this will hit the mark as there isn't a weak song on the album.

Faith in Others, River and Moon above, Sun below are standouts.

Beyond disappointing

Sure, I suppose this is more or less what I expected, but it’s always painful to witness a prior love fall so low. At best it’s a poor man’s Ghost Reveries. At worst it’s a quickly forgotten seventies throw back that fails to match its inspiration in any way. Whatever, I’m off to listen to My Arms Your Hearse, inarguably their high point.

Formed: 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Brought together in Stockholm by guitarists Peter Lindgren and Mikael Åkerfeldt in 1990, Opeth added progressive influences and acoustic instrumentation to their brand of Swedish death metal. As the group progressed, it was very common for an Opeth live set to fly in several different musical directions -- and an average song lasted no less than ten minutes. Impressed by their originality, Candlelight Records released their debut full-length in 1995, which was titled Orchid, and featured a rhythm...
