iTunes Review

Buckle your seatbelt for this one: Battles' 2007 debut is a puzzle box of daunting complexity—and it all unfolds at a breakneck pace. While founder Tyondai Braxton's heavily effected vocals do come into play here, Mirrored is largely an instrumental record, but its instruments play like an orchestra of machinery. On tracks like "Atlas" and "Tonto”, John Stanier builds tempos like a malfunctioning drum machine, while the rest of the band switch from frenzied to barely there. This is the sound of rock music happily collapsing in on itself.

Incredible

Like the other reviewer here, I saw Battles at Big Day Out, this time in Melbourne. I had heard their album Mirrored prior to that, and was interested to see how it would work out. They absolutely blew me away, and I reckon it was easily the most exciting set of the day for me, beating out Rage Against the Machine by miles! Mirrored is not going to be for everyone. Aside from "Race-in" and "Atlas", there aren't really any immediately accessible songs, but if you give this more than a cursory listen, you will uncover music the likes of which you've never heard before. The guitars- looped over and over, on top of each other and sequenced to perfection- are tight and hypnotic, and John Stanier's drumming is a thing to behold- especially with his six-foot high set crash! With these two things in combination, as well as Tyondai Braxton's weird, chipmunk style looped vocal samples, make a hypnotic mix especially on Atlas, Race-in, Tonto, Tij (they opened with this in Melbourne) and Rainbows- all are engaging listening, and will have the listener coming back for more. If you're looking for something that will blow your mind and expand your horizons, Mirrored is it. Can't wait to see what Battles cook up on their next release!

Brilliant

Mirrored is Brilliant, The freshest album to come out in a long time. Well ahead of its time, makes The Mars Volta sound old school.

Best BDO set ever

Saw & heard these guys for the first time at Adelaide BDO 2008. They are so much better live so if you love the album get off ya bum and go see them, I am glad I did. Bought the CD for $25 and it's worth EVERY cent. Yes it does take a few listens (unless it's live of course) but it's worth it!!
