five albums in one

This is a great follow up album for Decoder Ring. It ranges in theme from the rockin' opener 'Jets' to electro and more ambient tracks like 'Ramaine'. I even noticed a little hook from their awesome 'Somersault' soundtrack somewhere. There is not a single stand out track or hit but rather an album which guides the listener through a bunch of different moods gradually. The tracks flow on nicely from each other to make killer well rounded album. A beautiful mix of tracks.

Tremendous versatility

Listening to their debut soundtrack Somersault, one might be forgiven for thinking Decoder Ring have a fairly limited range. One encompassing some brilliant music, of course, but narrow nonetheless. Fractions, however, is without doubt the widest ranging album I've heard in years, from the blissful electronica of 'Serac' to the rocking 'Jets' and 'Shining Path'. Standout tracks, in my mind, are the title track 'Fractions', melding superb vocal work with a simple yet effective backing, and the darker 'Out of Range' - particularly spectacular when paired with the uplifting 'To Die', further highlighting the versatility of these fine musicians. 'Anahedonia', however, mystifies me, appearing only to be an extended atmospheric introduction for '451', a song that derives much of its strength from the fact that it doesn't need one. 'Traffic' also seems to fall a little flat, with Decoder Ring's trademark melodies taking back seat to slightly dissapointing vocals. These minor objections aside, 'Fractions' is an outstanding album, from a group that will with any luck be the next big thing in Australian music.

Lots of nice suprises - overall good album.

Decoder ring has always brought a very creative perspective into the music world. There are a few interesting suprises in this album - however, Heidi's song is still my favourite track. Wish we would see them up at Woodford this year!
