Album Review

Part of the blues-oriented Retrospectives series that Ichiban launched in 1998, this 12-song CD unites six previously unreleased tracks with six songs Trudy Lynn recorded after signing with the label in 1989. A retrospective that paints an accurate picture of Lynn's Ichiban output would have to fluctuate between electric urban blues and gutsy soul, which is exactly what the album does. Ichiban's choices aren't bad at all — "Whole Lotta Leave Me Alones" and the full-of-attitude "Trudy Sings The Blues" show how convincing a blues singer she can be, while "8 Days On the Road" is pure Southern R&B in the 1960s Memphis/Muscle Shoals tradition. Bobby Womack's "Woman's Got to Have It," however, has a sleeker 1970s type of feel. The new material ranges from live versions of Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Workin'" and Aretha Franklin's "Dr. Feelgood" to "Chilly Wind" (a rare example of Lynn embracing acoustic rural blues). For those who've never experienced the pleasures of Lynn's gutbucket belting, Retospectives would be the logical starting point.
