Bob cures the blues

You know, I bought a compilation of Bob Wills (A Proper Introduction to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys) a while back, after first hearing him on AccuRadio Twang, and I was just delighted. Even his sad songs are happy! And, sure as anything, here's even more Bob. I guess with a back catalog stretching from the 1930s to the 1960s, there's even more classic Bob out there then you can fit on, what, the 4 CDs that we see here? Do yourself a favor; if you're after someone to set your foot tapping, get you out of the doldrums and even make you laugh, then you can't go past Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys (or the Fort Worth Doughboys as they were once known). The quality of these recordings sounds excellent, but don't be disappointed by his earlier work - some of the songs were recorded over the telephone line. Bob Wills' work is a fantastic introduction to mid-20th century American western music and you will appreciate the incredible mix of country, western (both kinds of music!), swing, blues, ragtime, New Orleans jazz, rockabilly... the list goes on, often mixed up in the same song!. Listen hard - it's all there. In fact, I believe that he was the master of the art, probably the best of his generation. Do yourself a favor, but be careful. Once you've heard Bob, there's no turning back. Then you've got to buy some Peewee King, Hank Penny, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell...

Bob Wills' name will forever be associated with Western swing. Although he did not invent the genre single-handedly, he did popularize the genre and changed its rules. In the process, he reinvented the rules of popular music. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys were a dance band with a country string section that played pop songs as if they were jazz numbers. Their music expanded and erased boundaries between genres. It was also some of the most popular music of its era. Throughout the '40s, the band...
