Editors’ Notes

Before bass player Chi Cheng’s 2008 car accident left him comatose, Deftones were working on an album titled Eros. But the band didn’t feel right forging ahead without Cheng, so they shelved Eros and waited patiently before finally deciding to work on a different project with Sergio Vega, former bassist of the post-hardcore band Quicksand. Diamond Eyes was recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Stone Sour) who helped give Deftones’ sixth album a much more atmospheric sound than 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist. “Royal” leans on dark Sabbathy sludge and a pummeling rhythm section, but singer Chino Moreno contrasts his blistering screams with breathy crooning. Moreno’s lyrical matter detours from negative themes and cathartic complaints on Diamond Eyes — he even stated in an interview that Cheng’s accident brought the band closer together, giving the album a “positive zest for life.” Standout track “Rocket Skates” best exemplifies this with imagery similar to “Knife Party” from 2000’s White Pony.

Nice & Aggressive

Great new album by Sacremento boys Deftones. Pretty aggressive again, while not as much as s/t album but just as much as 'Saturday Night Wrist'.
Chinos vocals are once again intense and beautiful throughout every track, proving once again he is so much more than a straight forward vocalist. He uses his vocals to almost become an instrument within it's self.
Definitely download worthy.

I'm really digging this album so far. I appreciate that there are always stand out tracks across all Deftones' albums. Stand out tracks for me are 'Risk', 'You've Seen the Butcher', 'Sextape', 'Prince', and '976 evil'. They've included covers on this album too. I love the songs they've chosen to cover over the years and this time is no different. I like the hardened sound they put on the Cardigan's 'Do you believe' and you will listen to this over the original. 'Ghosts' is rid-i-cu-lous, I'm so glad they put this on the album. Chino's voice is incredible the way it morphs between genres and this track is a good example of this. He doesn't sing this way on a lot of tunes but its hot! I dig! Pick this one up, you won't be disappointed.

Great album, ROYAL, CMND/CTRL, 976-EVIL, along with Rocket Skates are the true standout tracks here. The overall album has a very polished sound to it, theres no rawness unlike previous Deftones albums. I will mention Chino has never sounded better, theres real emotion in his voice (976-evil), and Stefs 8 string riffs will tear your speakers apart. IMO best album since White Pony. Enjoy.

Deftones were one of the first groups to alternate heavy riffs and screamed vocals with more ethereal music and hushed singing — spawning a fair amount of imitators in their wake. The group first formed in Sacramento, California during 1988, when then high-school students Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), and Chino Moreno (vocals) first began to jam together. They chose the name Deftones and began playing...
