Album Review

The 14 tracks that make up Rounder's Essential Alison Krauss were handpicked by the artist herself. A successful performer since the age of 14, Krauss had quite the well to draw from, and Essential does a nice job giving listeners a cupful from each stage in her career, from the spirited, traditional bluegrass that propelled her into the spotlight in the late '80s to her genre-bending work with ex-Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant in the late 2000s. While by no means an exhaustive study of the artist, Essential Alison Krauss offers a tidy, compact summation of the talented singer/fiddler's career to date.

A quick lesson...

Alison Krauss' laser-precise vocals and sublime fiddle work make her the most celebrated country/bluegrass artist of the last 20+ years, but thanks to the success of her contribution to the 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' soundtrack and her recent collaboration with rock legend and Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant ('Raising Sand') she has been catapulted into the heart of the mainstream and is taking over the world! For those on a quest to delve back into the earlier works created with her band Union Station, and a glimpse back over a 25+ year recording career this album is a brilliant jumping-off point. Featuring key tracks from most of her studio albums - her contract states that she record an album as 'Alison Krauss', often reserved for her more pop/folk efforts, and that the next album be 'Alison Krauss & Union Station', traditionally reserved for the well-loved contemporary bluegrass stylings we've come to know and love - the songs here aren't all the hits, but a carefully selected highlights package of fine songwriting executed to perfection by Krauss and her band. Highlights include 'So Long, So Wrong' from the album of the same name, 'Every Time You Say Goodbye' and the fantastic cover of The Foundations 'Baby, Now That I've Found You.' Highly recommended.

Alison Krauss helped bring bluegrass to a new audience in the '90s. Blending bluegrass with folk, Krauss was instantly acclaimed from the start of her career, but it wasn't until her platinum-selling 1995 compilation Now That I've Found You that she became a mainstream star. Between her 1987 debut Too Late to Cry and Now That I've Found You, she matured from a child prodigy to a versatile, ambitious, and diverse musician and, in the process, made some of the freshest bluegrass of the late '80s and...
