iTunes Review

Hoodoo Gurus’ barnstorming debut album updates sunny ’60s pop for the ’80s. It also veers into screaming primitivism and chugging power pop, with Dave Faulkner brandishing a Kinksy snide quality. Such mood swings are key: The South Pacific-set “Leilani” and the creature-feature menace of “Dig It Up” both play up the band’s kitschy side, but “My Girl” goes the opposite way with its sweetly chiming heartache. These songs make a point of flexing their outsized range without sacrificing the band’s inherent cheekiness.

"Great Aussie Debut Album"

Stoneage Romeos is one of the great Australian debut albums of all time. The boys kick off with the frenetic "(Let's All) Turn On" setting the pace for the album. There is much teen angst that can be related to in "I Want you Back" and "My Girl". "Arthur Dig it Up and Death Ship" are of a much more sombre mood. The haunting"Zanzibar" feeds well into Leilani" and the last 3 tracks. "Tojo " a classic "Into the Echo Chamber" solid and the catchy "I Was a Kamikaze Pilot" round off the album.

A classic 80s album

Hoodoo Gurus were one of Australia's best live acts in the 80s and 90s. This album is a true classic with virtually every song becoming a hit. The music is funky and danceable while the lyrics are worth listening closely to.

A must have!!

Like most bands, Australia's Hoodoo Gurus were largely the product of their influences; unlike most bands, however, the Hoodoos channeled their inspiration from the vast entirety of the American pop cultural landscape, drawing on such disparate sources as B-movies, bad sitcoms, and junk food -- in tandem with the usual suspects like garage rock, power pop, and surf -- to create a distinctly kitschy and catchy sound. Formed in Sydney in 1981, Le Hoodoo Gurus (as they were originally dubbed) were led...
