13 Songs, 41 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Holly Rankin’s life was irreversibly changed at age 14, after the sudden, accidental death of her younger sister. The New South Wales singer/songwriter's debut album as Jack River, Sugar Mountain (an homage to Neil Young’s track lamenting the end of youthful innocence), arrives 12 years later, depicting the hazy grief that engulfed the years that followed. She remembers her sister on the largely acoustic “Her Smile” (“Her smile pierces through the universe”) and reveals the lingering darkness she’s lived with since. “There’s all these people in the room/I just wanna be alone,” she sings on the luminescent “Ballroom”, and on “So High”, admits, “I don’t know how to tell you this/I am so sad.”
